Generic-X History
When someone claims to have the "Real" story.
:please note the following:
Generic-X originated over a year ago upon advice from Mercury Mad's business associates Record Producer/Recording Engineer, Brad Koehler and Chief Fashion Consultant, Frank.
Mercury at the time was fronting and building the Lawrence/Kansas city Glam group VIBRALUX, a most annoyingly popular Trans-Rock group who was known more for their wild parties and public antics than their music.
Koehler, and Frank's suggestion was that Merc. have a DJ project to exercise such extra musical/artistic visual party demons. The argument from Merc was always "But I don't know jack shit about being a DJ. I only know what rocks, and how to have fun".
Over two and a half years ago Merc. had been friends with Gunter Kallman who was putting his first DJ sets together. Mercury, who had been booking local DJ sets at Vibralux after parties, asked Kallman to DJ several party sets for minimal pay and excessive drink benefits. Around the same time Kallman, (operating under the alias Magnetic South) had achieved a Wednesday night position at a Lawrence pub The Gaslight Tavern. Kallman had a distinct hatred for walking and postering. Merc offered graphic design and fast footwork in return for friendship and teaching Merc to DJ.
Further contact and french-frie discussion caused them to realize their similar artistic attitude towards the world. Their friendship grew stronger. Kallman began hitting movie nights and other events with Merc. John Waters films and others like them were of the first viewed by Merc. and Kallman during said evenings. Most of these nights resulted in late hours conversations about how shit sucked and "Somebody" needed to start "something" to make fun of it so that shit wouldn't suck anymore. Mercury would do what he/she did well by running publicity, personality, improv, and sideshow departments. Kallman would snap photos, work on mix-discs, and go for the throat with his-already mastered "no shit here, just fucking dance already" skill-set.
After several trips to New York and being impressed with the attitude of parties at Scenic, Crobar, and Opaline Merc suggested a similar Club/Party only for the Midwest. The difference would be it's mobility and versatility. The goal was to be prepared to throw a show at random after-parties or venues whenever asked. Laptops and mixers fit into backpacks with extra wires and off we go baby!
After a year of collaboration and questioning a panel of advisors (AKA friends who liked to dance a lot and get naked) were brought in to test the effect of different names on the human animal. The name Generic-X stood out as ironic commentary of how much shit sucked and everything in the Midwest area was nothing but a bunch of ironic TRASH. Merc. added FILTH as his/her own tribute to visual artists such as John Waters and Divine. The victims of fashion were hopefully soon to follow, laugh, and dance in their wake.
Love and Poo, Generic-X
